The difference between an inshore angler who consistently catches fish and one who struggles is not lure selection or casting distance. It is the ability to read water. Productive inshore anglers look at a flat, a shoreline, or a channel and see structure, current flow, and fish-holding features that are invisible to untrained eyes. Reading water is a skill you develop over time, but understanding the fundamentals gives you a massive head start.
Why Water Reading Matters
Inshore fish — redfish, speckled trout, flounder, snook, sheepshead — do not distribute randomly across the coast. They concentrate where current delivers food, where structure provides ambush points, and where depth transitions give them access to safety. These features are visible from the surface if you know what to look for.
An angler who can read water spends less time searching and more time fishing productive spots. Instead of blind-casting across a featureless flat, you identify the one drain, the one oyster bar edge, or the one current seam that is holding fish, and you put your bait there first.

Cuts and Drains
Why fish use them. As the tide falls, baitfish, shrimp, and crabs get swept out of the marsh through these drains. Redfish, trout, and flounder know this and position themselves at the mouths of cuts, waiting for the current to deliver dinner. A cut mouth during an outgoing tide is a feeding station.
How to identify them. Look for subtle lines of moving water on a flat. Even in shallow water, a cut creates a visible current line — slightly darker water where the channel is deeper, or a ripple line where moving water meets still water. On satellite imagery, cuts appear as darker veins running through lighter-colored flats.
How to fish them. Position yourself on the down-current side of the cut and cast into the flow. Let your bait drift naturally out of the cut like the prey fish are doing. Alternatively, anchor at the mouth and cast up-current into the cut, retrieving your bait back toward you with the flow.
Channels
Channel edges. The transition from shallow flat to deeper channel concentrates fish along the ledge. Redfish and trout patrol these edges, especially during tide transitions when bait is moving between the flat and the channel.
Bends. Where a channel curves, current digs deeper on the outside of the bend and deposits sediment on the inside, creating a deep-shallow transition in a small area. Fish stage on the deep side of bends during low water and move to the shallow inside during high water.
Channel intersections. Where two channels or a channel and a cut meet, current converges and creates confusion in the water. Bait gets disoriented, and predators take advantage. These junctions are high-percentage spots.
How to read channel depth from the surface. Darker water indicates deeper water. A channel running through a flat appears as a darker stripe against the lighter, shallower flat. Current speed also indicates depth — water moves faster over shallow bottom and slows slightly over deeper sections.
Current Lines
Tidal current seams. Where the main tidal flow meets a back eddy or slack water, a visible seam forms on the surface — often marked by a line of foam, debris, or a subtle color change. Fish hold on the slow side of the seam, darting into the current to grab food.
Temperature breaks. Where warm water meets cool water — often near power plant discharges, springs, or the mouths of tributaries — a visible line may form. Fish congregate at temperature breaks because bait does, and because different species have different temperature preferences that create a stacking effect.
Color changes. Where clear water meets murky water, a visible line forms. This happens at creek mouths, after rain, and near inlets. Fish often hold on the clear side of the line, where they can see prey moving in the murky water.
Surface Signs
Nervous water. Subtle ripples or a slightly disturbed patch on an otherwise calm surface indicates fish moving just below. Nervous water over a flat often means a school of redfish or trout cruising. It is worth a cast even when you cannot identify the species.
Wakes. A V-shaped wake on a calm flat is a single large fish — usually a redfish, ray, or shark — pushing water. If it is a short, intermittent wake with no dorsal fin, it is likely a redfish. Cast well ahead of the wake's direction.
Bait activity. Mullet jumping, shrimp flipping on the surface, or baitfish spraying indicate predators nearby. If bait is actively fleeing on the surface, game fish are almost certainly underneath.
Bird activity. Pelicans diving, terns hovering, and herons standing motionless at the water's edge are all indicators of bait and fish presence. Diving birds mean baitfish near the surface. Herons standing in shallow water often mark the edge of a flat or cut where bait concentrates.
Putting It Together
When you arrive at an inshore spot, resist the urge to start casting immediately. Take two minutes to observe.
Look for current movement — where is water flowing, and where is it still? Identify color changes that indicate depth transitions. Watch for bait activity on the surface. Notice whether the tide is rising, falling, or slack. Locate cuts, channel edges, or oyster bars that create structure on the flat.
Then cast to the highest-percentage feature you identified. If that does not produce in five to ten minutes, move to the next feature.
Reading water turns fishing from a guessing game into a systematic approach. The fish are always telling you where they are. You just have to learn their language.
